Individualized, Customized Learning Plans

A2Z Tutoring is known for individualized, effective, and creative tutoring services. The sessions are held by Amanda Znutas, an experienced and licensed educator. Amanda specializes in tutoring math, reading, and writing for students between kindergarten and fifth grade. After the initial consultation, Amanda will develop a cohesive tutoring plan. The plan will consist of customized lessons to utilize during the tutoring sessions, which will be continuously monitored and modified according to your child's progress.  With these tutoring sessions, your child will embrace his or her full academic potential; leading to opportunities for a more positive and successful future.

Different Students Require Different Approaches to Learning

Intelligence has been viewed and described in various ways, but according to Howard Gardner it is “the capacity to solve problems or to fashion products that are valued in one or more cultural settings (Gardner &Hatch, 1989).” Gardner is not a proponent of general intelligence, but has developed the theory that there are seven different types of intelligence. These intelligences include linguistic, logical, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, interpersonal, and intrapersonal intelligence. All individuals utilize each of the seven intelligences at a basic level, but every human excels in some areas of intelligence more than others. Thus, each individual has a “unique blend of intelligences (Gardner, 1999).” Every learner is unique and needs lessons that are developed to touch upon their individual learning style/individual needs.

During A2Z Tutoring sessions Amanda takes a multi-sensory approach, as often as possible, to enhance her students’ learning by focusing on their strengths and preferences. Not only does this tap into their innate ability and connect it to academic content, but it also acts as a motivator to learn. Just a few ways that Amanda creates this type of environment is to utilize interactive Smartboard lessons on her laptop, play educational games, include songs and dances, have various displays/charts, and utilize manipulatives.

Testimonials

Throughout elementary school math was the subject that I struggled with the most. So naturally when I started 6th grade, and my parents no longer knew how to help me with my math homework, I started working with Amanda. On my own, I would easily get frustrated and want to give up. After working with Amanda on a weekly basis, I gradually became less confused and more independent. I was going to math class feeling more confident and everyone saw an improvement. Soon, I began working with Amanda only when I really needed it instead of every week. In 8th grade, I was one of 30 students chosen to take the Algebra I course, which is normally taken as a freshman. Now in 10th grade, math is one of my best and favorite subjects. I went from getting C’s in 6th grade to now getting A’s all the time. I think if it weren’t for my tutoring with Amanda, I would have never gotten the attention or improvement necessary to understand and enjoy math the way I do now.

If anyone is thinking about hiring a tutor for their child, I highly recommend contacting Amanda.  She worked with both of my sons to help improve their reading and writing.  Toward the end of kindergarten, my son Jason was still having difficulty identifying letters, determining letter-sound awareness, and recognizing high-frequency words.  Jason’s teacher wanted to retain him, but my husband and I were very much opposed to that suggestion.  Instead, we opted to find a tutor to catch Jason up throughout the summer months.  From the beginning, Amanda’s knowledge was evident and her goals for Jason were clear.  Amanda not only helped him catch up to reading at his grade level, but also helped him apply those skills to writing basic sentences, and helped him increase his confidence as he entered first grade.  With continued tutoring, Jason is now reading fluently, is able to comprehend what he reads, and is eager to show off his reading ability.  My son Avery also worked with Amanda, but as a fourth grader, he had different needs.  She helped him develop strategies to organize his thoughts, utilize acronyms to help format various types of essays, introduced him to “compositional risks,” and taught him how to go back to edit and revise his work.   He always had great ideas, but as a result of his tutoring sessions he can now put those ideas on paper in a comprehensible manner.

Throughout all of these sessions Amanda was not only kind and patient, but also creative and prepared.  She always came equipped with different hands-on items such as play dough, an iPad, laptop, crafts, songs, visual aids, erasable sentence strips, and so much more.  What my husband and I love most about Amanda is her ability to adapt her tutoring style in a manner that is creative, comfortable, and motivating to both of my sons given their very unique personalities, strengths, and challenges.  As parents nothing is more heartbreaking than watching your child frustrated because they weren’t given the right opportunities to reach their potential.  Fortunately, my heartbreak has transformed into elation. Witnessing the academic improvement that my sons experienced was incredible, but watching my children transform into proud, eager, and motivated learners was much more than I expected! My entire family is grateful for Amanda’s help and this overall experience.

Amanda tutored me in every subject throughout middle school, after I was cast in the Broadway play Billy Elliot. I needed to be partially home schooled since I spent a lot of time at rehearsals and performances. It was important to my family and I that I kept my grades up even though I was working  and missing a lot of hours in school. Amanda helped me so much throughout those three years. Not only did she help me get my work done efficiently, but she also helped me juggle school with extra-curricular activities, work, and an overall busy schedule. It took hard work to maintain the grades that I had hoped for, but Amanda made every subject clear and comprehensible, while also guiding me to become a better

student. Even though I was getting tutored in many subjects, she wasn't weak at any of them. My family and I knew we could trust her to give me the most constructive support.
